Pumpkin Contest 2005

The votes have been tallied!  It was closer this year than in 2003, a nail biter until the end...

Castle (Roice): 34        Frank (Sarah): 21

For those who didn't recognize, Sarah's pumpkin was inspired by the character Frank from the movie Donnie Darko.  Roice's pumpkin was inspired by... uhhh... umm... well.... not to take away from his mad championship winning pumpkin skills, but read the press release here.

Selected Quotes from the Voters

Jon Nemec:

<censored> how much time do you have. Even with MotoGP and Law&Order and Gray's Antonmy still have time for carving. Now since Roice used a stencil on reaper I wished I had voted for Sream. So castle looks like stencil use, and Frank looks likesomething my sister would do so Frank. VIVA LA "FRANK"  go Frank

Leigh Linden:

Both are amazing... But I've got to go with the castle...  Frank is cool -- delicately carved, classically scary.  The castle, however, works for me on many different levels: whimsically structured, multidimensional, subtly alive.  The longer I look at it, the more I notice.

Melissa Antenucci:

(Oh god, please don't post this) LOL!  Sarah, I hope this is your pumpkin.  We girls need to stick together.  (voted for Frank)

Matt Brower:

Both are great, but Frank from Donnie Darko is scarier so it gets my vote.

I know it seems like I am voting twice but this one is for Rachel.  She also digs the Frank.

Paulette Nemec:

Looks like great art to me!

Larry Nemec:

Well, I like the precision of Castle which makes me think Roice.  I see the creativity of Frank which makes me think Sarah.  Since I screwed up last time and voted for Reaper (Roice) and had to live with that mistake from my daughter for two years I hope I get it right this time so I vote “FRANK”.  I like Castle too.

Sarah Nelson (Ben's Sarah):

Great job on both but you probably saw my vote was on the castle -- that's f$#%ing impressive!
:)

Ben Nelson:

One of my favorite movies in recent years (although its not really that recent)!  THEY MADE ME DO IT!

Paul Nelson:

I like the castle (Although I have my suspicions that it the result of a Wal-Mart pattern kit), but my vote goes to Frank because he reminds me of three things I am quite fond of:

1.  The bad guy on Willow (you know that magical movie with Val Kilmer and scores of midgets) that wears the skull mask,

2.  The fiery dragon creature from Lord of the Rings that Gandalf fights and defeats, and

3.   The bad gremlins who are out to hurt that cute little Gizmo

Marti Nelson:

The castle is cute and all, but Frank, oh Frank--I'm a sucker for anything literary. Even though it doesn't really look like Frankenstein. You DID mean Frankenstein? Or maybe hot dogs?

Confused,
Mom/Marti

Charlie Nevill:

wow, you guys amaze me.  both of these kick much ass.  and the ones from 2003: totally impressive.

zotkya:

Despite the fact the castle looks like a cut out pattern from Wal-mart I felt compelled to vote for

It because bending the rules is what I am all about too!! Testosterone rules!!

Rik Zafar

This takes me back to high school  Roice, me, Ankur, Leigh, Hermoine...good times good times.

And last but definitely not least, Mark Groves:

As far as pumpkin carving goes...and I must say I am quite an expert having been through 32 halloweens in my life....I would have to say the geometry of the castle is very exceptional.  Although, the dynamic lines on the skull represent a higher artistic ability than the right angles of a brick and mortar structure.  It must be said that the difficulty in achieving a symetric shape on a round surface is quite difficult and can render a user with knife in hand to end up with no fingers at all upon the completion of the task.  Of importance in distinguishing between good and better you must further analyze the basic concepts.  First, the castle...where do castles come from?  Why do we have castles?  Is the basic castle on pumpkin symbolic of Halloween?  Further, when reviewing the skull image one cannot ignore the fact that we all have a skull.  As a matter of fact, knowing that one posses a skull and not a castle may be enough to swing many votes in this direction even if one determines that the skill required to produce a square object on a round surface is significantly greater than the sum of all sides of the round object.  In conclusion....you guys have too much damn free time!  Good luck!
